Many developers don’t really think about haptics. We build and test our apps on simulators, work under tight deadlines, and call it a day when the UI looks fine. Because of that, one of the most powerful UX tools is often overlooked. I’m also guilty of spending countless hours obsessing about UI and animations, but hardly ever thinking about touch. In this interactive talk, I’ll go through haptics in mobile development. We’ll start with the complete basics, including how it works under the hood, and then move into design principles that help you build the intuition behind well designed haptic experiences. We’ll touch on the important topic of a11y and then we’ll dive deeper into custom haptic patterns, gesture-driven haptics and how to match sounds with haptics – all backed up by practical examples. You’ll see how much better an app experience could be with relatively low effort. You’ll leave this talk with practical guidelines you can use in your app the moment you leave the venue.
